Employer description
About Formlabs
To reinvent an industry, you have to build the best team. Join Formlabs to build the tools that let anyone bring their ideas to life.
Formlabs printers steer lasers with galvanometers, hold resin at temperature, read their own tilt and vibration, and know which material is loaded into them. Firmware ties all of it together. Every day, our printers print more than 10,000 parts: surgical guides, dental restorations, hearing aid shells, and prototypes. When the firmware is wrong, a 14-hour print fails, and a clinician does not get the part they were expecting on Tuesday.
We think the engineer who writes the control loop should also be able to write the kernel driver under it, the touch screen above it, and the message it sends to the cloud. Handing each of those to a separate team kills ownership. Here, you own your product.
What You'll Do
- Build once, run everywhere.** Extend the Formlabs architecture with a "printer abstraction layer", so that one codebase drives several printer families. When a new machine arrives, you write its HAL. You do not copy paste code.
- Own the whole path.** Write kernel modules for sensors that have no driver. Write 1-Wire and RFID drivers for consumables. Build the Qt 6 / QML touch UI and the GStreamer camera stream. Connect the machine to the cloud and our new Formlabs mobile app over MQTT with generated protobuf interfaces.
- Ship to both ends.** Bring up prototype machines that don't have names yet, and push features to the tens of thousands of printers already in the field, often in the same week.
- You'll write mostly C++ and Python, plus some Go and TypeScript.
- You won't wait for board delivery to test your work. An MCU simulator and UI automation let you run much of the stack on your laptop, inside a dev container with the cross-compilation SDKs already installed. CI flashes nightly images onto real printers and runs real prints. Our tools here can always be better, and fixing what's still rough is also part of the job.
About You
- You have written code that lives on hardware products (consumer, medical, defense, or industrial) for somewhere between 5 and 100 years of your life.
- You can write filters, control loops, state machines, and RPC from scratch in C, C++, or Python.
- You would rather put a logic analyzer on the bus than argue about whose layer the bug is in.
- Slow feedback loops make you impatient, so you fix them.
- You can explain a timing bug to a mechanical engineer without talking down to them.
Bonus: Qt/QML, Yocto, or experience taking a product from prototype to fleet.
