Employer description
The future of aerospace and defense starts here.
Ursa Major was founded to revolutionize how America and its allies access and apply high-performance propulsion, from hypersonics to solid rocket motors, satellite maneuvering and launch. We design and deliver propulsion and defense systems that solve the most urgent and critical national security demands.
Position Summary
The Industrial Hygienist & Ergonomist intern will work closely with the environmental, health, and safety team by identifying, evaluating, and controlling workplace health and comfort risks, with a focus on chemical, physical, and biological exposures as well as ergonomic risk factors for new processes associated with the Galeton expansion project. This role partners with operations, facilities, HR, and safety teams to develop and implement programs that prevent occupational illness and injury, improve employee well‑being, and support regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Industrial Hygiene
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments for chemical, physical (noise, radiation, temperature), and biological hazards in production, laboratory, office, and field environments.
- Develop and execute industrial hygiene sampling plans using appropriate equipment (e.g., air sampling pumps, dosimeters, direct‑reading instruments).
- Analyze sampling data, interpret results against regulatory and consensus standards (e.g., OSHA PELs, ACGIH TLVs), and recommend control measures.
- Recommend engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment (PPE) controls to reduce exposures.
- Maintain industrial hygiene records, reports, sampling logs, and calibration documentation.
- Support development and review of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) usage, chemical inventories, and hazard communication programs.
- Develop and deliver training related to industrial hygiene topics (e.g., respiratory protection, noise/hearing conservation, chemical hygiene).
Ergonomics
- Conduct ergonomic assessments for manufacturing workstations, material handling tasks, laboratory setups, office environments, and remote workstations.
- Identify ergonomic risk factors (e.g., force, repetition, awkward postures, contact stress, vibration) using recognized assessment tools and methods.
- Recommend and help implement ergonomic design improvements, equipment, tools, and work practice changes.
- Collaborate with engineering and operations on the design and review of new processes, workstations, and tools to ensure ergonomic principles are integrated upfront.
- Support job task analysis and physical demand descriptions.
- Develop and deliver ergonomic training and awareness programs for employees and supervisors.
Program Management & Collaboration
- Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of comprehensive Industrial Hygiene and Ergonomics programs.
- Work cross‑functionally with EHS, Operations, Engineering, Facilities, HR, and Occupational Health to align health and ergonomics initiatives with business objectives.
- Prepare clear, data‑driven reports and presentations for leadership, documenting findings, risk levels, and recommended actions.
Qualifications
Education
- Perusing a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health & Safety, Ergonomics, Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, or related field required.
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of OSHA, NIOSH, ACGIH, ANSI and other applicable occupational health and safety standards.
- Ability to analyze data, interpret exposure results, and communicate risk clearly.
- Competent with standard office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and EHS management systems.
Competencies
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a practical, solutions‑oriented mindset.
- Ability to influence and collaborate at all levels of the organization.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including training and coaching.
