Employer description

Location: El Segundo, CA. On-site at our headquarters.

Job type: Contract, 2–6 weeks

Pay: $100–175 per hour

Start date: ASAP

Schedule: Full-time, weekdays (flexible)

Durin was founded under the belief that raw materials should not be a constraint on civilization's progress. We are actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of becoming the foundation of the global supply chain.

WHO WE ARE

Durin builds and operates automated drill rigs to accelerate mineral discovery.

Our modern way of life, from smartphones to skyscrapers, starts as ore in the ground. But mines don't simply appear. In fact, the exploration process required to find valuable ore is incredibly long and expensive. This is done by drilling hundreds of surgical holes into the earth to recover cylindrical core samples.

Mining is a trillion-dollar industry, but the drills used to explore haven't changed in nearly 100 years. Mines are becoming harder to find, which is a danger to the future of civilization. Our mission is to change that. The first step is mass production of automated drilling rigs to find more mines, faster. That is just the beginning.

THE ROLE

We're looking for an experienced MIG welder to join our El Segundo shop on a full-time contract for 2–6 weeks. You'll finish a large, already fit-up steel weldment (a rod-handling frame for our drill rig) and support other structural welding on the rig build. Speed matters: this work needs to be done with production MIG (GMAW) or flux-core (FCAW), not TIG.

Note: You don't need mining or drilling experience to excel in this role.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Production MIG (GMAW) and/or flux-core (FCAW) welding of steel structures and frames for drilling equipment, including plate, gussets, bulkheads, and tube-frame members.
  • Finish welding on a large weldment that's already partially fit and tacked. This includes reaching into tight spots through access panels to weld internal gussets.
  • Fit-up, tacking, grinding, and weld cleanup. Repair or cut out and redo welds when needed.
  • Read and work from fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and the engineers' direction, and flag any problems before they turn into rework.
  • Manage heat and distortion on long structures, and keep alignment within tolerance.
  • Keep a clean, organized, and safe work area. Follow shop safety rules, including hot-work and fire-watch practices, PPE, and housekeeping at the end of every shift.
  • Report to Nelson and work closely with our mechanical engineering and assembly team on a tight build schedule.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Several years of hands-on structural or production welding on steel, with GMAW (MIG) as your main process.
  • Comfortable welding in every position on heavy plate and structural steel.
  • Can read fabrication drawings and weld symbols.
  • Experienced with fit-up, grinding, and the shop tools that go with them.
  • Fast, consistent, and good quality. You can show pictures of your past welds.
  • Safety-minded, and you take pride in a clean work area.
  • Can handle physical work, including moving and lifting heavy parts.
  • Reliable and available full-time on-site for the whole 2–6 week contract.

BONUS POINTS FOR

  • AWS certification (for example, AWS D1.1 structural) or other current welding certifications.
  • Flux-core (FCAW) experience in addition to MIG.
  • Experience with heavy equipment, mining, oilfield, or other industrial machinery weldments.
  • Experience working to inspection by a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
  • Interest in staying on for future work as the build continues.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be willing to work from our headquarters in El Segundo
  • Must bring your own welding gear, including welding machine, hood, leathers, and PPE

TO APPLY

Send your resume or work history, along with photos of recent welds.
