Employer description

About BaseBase is America’s next-generation power company. We’re rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization–electricity–by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that is transforming today’s fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. We are engineers, operators, and creatives solving some of the most complex, interdisciplinary challenges of our time.

About the RoleAs a Power Systems Engineering Intern on Base’s Risk & Trading team, you’ll help model how our network of distributed residential batteries interacts with the grid, at both the distribution and transmission levels. During your internship you’ll be tasked with important problems for the business and expected to deliver just like any other full-time member of the team. You’ll work alongside Base’s power systems engineers on power flow studies, grid models, and the analysis behind where our batteries are deployed and how they’re dispatched.

This is hands-on engineering work with real stakeholders. The studies and tools you build will be used by Base’s operations and business development teams and can shape how we work with utilities and grid operators. You’ll own a scoped project end to end, from defining the study and building the model to presenting what you found.

What You’ll DoHelp design and run power flow studies (e.g., steady-state and contingency analyses) for Base battery aggregation use cases.

Build and validate distribution and transmission system models, using standard test topologies such as the IEEE test feeders.

Write Python to automate studies so they can be solved programmatically and run on a recurring basis.

Analyze and visualize study results and grid data, and turn them into clear recommendations, such as where on a feeder Base’s systems create the most value.

Compile and present your results to power systems engineers and the broader Risk & Trading team.

What You’ll BringCurrently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related technical field.

Coursework, research, or project experience in power systems: power flow, per-unit systems, and three-phase analysis.

Proficiency in Python for data analysis and visualization (e.g., pandas, NumPy, matplotlib).

A strong foundation in linear algebra and numerical methods (e.g., Newton-Raphson).

A strong ownership mindset and the ability to clearly explain your assumptions, methods, and results.

Nice to have: exposure to power flow tools such as OpenDSS, GridLAB-D, CYME, PSS/E, PowerWorld, PyPSA, or pandapower, or to optimal power flow and electricity markets (e.g., ERCOT).

About the TeamBase’s Risk & Trading team is tasked with ensuring the grid-support performance and profitability of Base’s distributed battery fleet. This encompasses device communications with balancing authorities, telemetry analysis, algorithms for fleet aggregation and economic dispatch, through to financial portfolio management in wholesale energy markets. Our power systems engineers are the team’s experts on how the fleet interacts with the grid, from distribution feeders to the bulk transmission system. Our team is made up of physicists, economists, computer scientists, and engineers; the best candidates will bring the day-over-day intensity of an operator with the foresight to drive the long term development of simpler, more performant automated control. Success looks like building the airplane as it falls out of the sky.

Please note: Base is a startup, which means priorities shift and evolve quickly. Your role may expand or change based on the needs of the business at any given time, so the responsibilities listed may not be exhaustive.

Our ValuesFirst Principles Thinking: Question assumptions. Principles > rules.

Operate at Base Pace: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.

Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble, and maintain a growth mindset.

Everyone’s an Owner: Follow through on commitments and own results.

Strong Opinions, Loosely Held: Drive clarity and make calls with imperfect information.

Committed to the Mission: Rebuilding the grid is a big challenge. We work hard because we care deeply about the impact we’re creating. We work in-person. It’s not a 9-to-5. We are all-in.

Fun & Optimism Coexist with Grit: Collaboration and celebration coincide with the intensity of building real things.

Do the best work of your life at Base.
