Employer description

About Standard BotsAt Standard Bots, we’re revolutionizing real-world automation by making robotic systems accessible to everyone. Our AI-powered platform enables robots to tackle unprecedented challenges through an intuitive instruction interface, bringing the power of software automation to physical spaces.

What you’ll doWe’re building Bolt, a mobile manipulation platform: an autonomous mobile base carrying our robot arms. We’re hiring two Senior Mechanical Engineers to own major subsystems of that platform. These include: the chassis, drivetrain and suspension, wheel modules, battery mounting, the control box, compute, and safety hardware, with its thermal management, cabling, and service access. You’ll take your subsystem from concept through prototype builds, test, and production release, and work hands-on in the shop and lab.

📍 LocationThis is an on-site role based at our new Boston-area office, where Bolt is designed, built, and tested, with some flexibility on days in the office once you’re up to speed. On-site you’ll have a build area, electronics lab, test floor, and production robots steps from your desk.

ResponsibilitiesOwn the design of Bolt subsystems from requirements through production release: concept, detailed design, analysis, drawings, and release

Run the trade studies that set your subsystem’s architecture — structure and material choices, stiffness and fatigue targets, thermal and IP strategy, serviceability, cost — and close them with EE, software, and safety

Do the hands-on work: SolidWorks design, hand calcs and FEA, tolerance stackups, DFM for sheet metal, castings, machined parts, weldments, and plastics; build and test your own prototypes

Define and run subsystem tests (static and dynamic loads, vibration, drop, thermal, ingress) and feed results back into the design

Be the technical contact for your subsystem’s fabricators; drive DFM/DFA feedback and support production issues

Lead design reviews for your subsystem and mentor junior engineers

Who you areYou’ve shipped electromechanical hardware that lives in the real world — a mobile robot, vehicle, industrial machine, or similar — and you know the difference between a design that passes FEA and one that survives a year on a warehouse floor. You like owning a subsystem end to end and being judged on the hardware. Our ideal candidate expects to spend roughly 60% of their time on design and analysis and 40% on builds, test, and manufacturing support.

Skills you’ll bringExperience: Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related) and 5+ years designing, building, and testing electromechanical products, including designs you’ve taken through production release

Mechanical Depth: Strong in structures and mechanisms — load paths, stiffness and fatigue, bearings and drivetrain components, fasteners and joints, tolerance analysis

Manufacturing: DFM for sheet metal, castings, machining, weldments, and injection molding; you know what each process costs and where it fails

Analysis: Hand calcs first, FEA when it earns its keep; you can size a part and defend the numbers

Tool Fluency: Proficient in SolidWorks (parts, large assemblies, drawings, simulation) and a PDM/PLM release process

Clarity of Communication: Clear design documentation, crisp trade studies, and design reviews that make your peers better

Impact Driven: A reliable, manufacturable part that ships beats an elegant one that never leaves the lab

Excelling in Ambitious Environments: You thrive in a fast-moving team with changing requirements and tight timelines

Bonus points forChassis focus: AMR/AGV, vehicle, or drivetrain design; suspension and wheel module design; caster and tire selection; stability analysis

Control box focus: thermal management of power electronics and compute, cable and harness routing, EMC-aware mechanical design

Battery pack packaging and thermal management

Safety certification exposure (ISO 3691-4, ANSI/RIA R15.08, ISO 13849)

Compensation and BenefitsThe base salary range for this role is $150,000 to $195,000, depending on experience. Base salary is just one part of the overall compensation at Standard Bots.
