Employer description
SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
SR. CONSTRUCTION MANAGER (POWER PLANT)
SpaceX is building and operating large-scale power generation for launch and compute. This role runs construction of the power plant in the field: civil, mechanical, and electrical installation of turbines and balance of plant, through mechanical completion and handoff to commissioning. This is not a desk job. You will be in the field, running the work.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead on-site construction for gas turbine power plants and associated balance of plant
- Direct contractors, superintendents, and SpaceX construction staff; own the daily plan
- Run direct-hire craft and subcontract crews through superintendents and general foremen; set craft loading by area
- Hold safety, quality, and schedule; stop work that is wrong
- Own the site safety program: LOTO, permit-to-work, hot work, NFPA 70E, and stop-work authority for everyone on site
- Set quality hold points for welding, NDE, hydrotest, and rotating-equipment alignment
- Sequence civil, mechanical, electrical, and controls installation so commissioning can start on time
- Manage OEM and EPC field presence, laydown, lifts, and tie-ins
- Own critical lift plans for turbines, generators, transformers, and skid or module sets
- Plan tie-ins, outages, and energizations around energized equipment already on site
- Verify installed quantities and contractor progress; manage field changes and change orders
- Turn over by system with walkdowns done, punch categorized, and test records and redlines in the dossier; a date on the schedule is not a turnover
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
- 5+ years of experience constructing utility-scale power plants in a field leadership role
- Experience leading construction of at least one large gas turbine installation (frame or aeroderivative), including balance of plant
- Direct experience managing contractors on a heavy industrial site
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- 10+ years of experience constructing utility-scale power plants in a field leadership role
- EPC construction management experience on power projects
- Mechanical installation of GE Vernova, Siemens Energy, Mitsubishi Power, or Doosan turbines, HRSGs, and large rotating equipment
- High-voltage and balance-of-plant electrical construction
- Fast industrial programs (data-center power, LNG, or mobile generation) in addition to utility plants
- Self-perform construction background, including time as a superintendent or general foreman
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary
- Must be available for full-time site presence
- Willingness to travel between sites
- Ability to work in an active construction environment, including outdoors, in heat, at heights, and in industrial PPE
ITAR REQUIREMENTS:
- To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
