Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer who owns the engineering behind custom process equipment and stays hands-on in the model. You design skid-based, modular and containerized systems in 2D and 3D, back them with calculations and analysis, and take them from concept to a validated, buildable design.
Whether your background is in process equipment, pressure vessels and heat exchangers, industrial machinery or engineering services, you make sound engineering calls, balance performance with manufacturability and cost, and know when to bring in specialists.
You are comfortable working directly with clients. You communicate clearly, ask the right questions, and synthesize their input into clear, documented project requirements and a design basis the team can build from.
This position is based onsite in Rochester and/or Rush, NY, with occasional travel to customer and supplier locations, typically less than 25%.
What You Get To Do
- Lead the mechanical design of industrial process systems, especially skid-based and modular equipment, from requirements through release, commissioning support and handoff.
- Model and manage SolidWorks parts, assemblies, weldments and sheet metal, and AutoCAD 2D/3D layouts.
- Develop general arrangements, equipment layouts, fabrication and assembly drawings, and bills of material.
- Define technical requirements, design bases and specifications with clients and the project team.
- Perform engineering calculations, and select and size equipment such as pumps, heat exchangers, vessels, tanks, valves and drives.
- Run simulation and analysis (FEA, structural, thermal, pipe stress) and ensure designs meet ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII, and client requirements.
- Lead technical design reviews, evaluate design solutions, and provide guidance to project teams and customers.
- Partner with fabrication and assembly teams to resolve technical challenges and support successful equipment builds and installations.
- Support project planning, technical proposals, and engineering estimates.
- Mentor junior designers and engineers, providing technical guidance and reviewing design and engineering work.
- Improve engineering and design standards, tools, and processes to enhance quality, consistency, and efficiency.
What You Bring To The Team
Required
- A BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
- 7+ years of mechanical design engineering experience in process equipment, industrial systems or engineering services.
- Advanced proficiency in 3D and 2D modelling software including SolidWorks and working AutoCAD, or similar tools.
- Strong experience with engineering calculations, equipment sizing and selection, and design analysis (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS or similar).
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards such as ASME Section VIII, and ASME B31.3.
- Ability to independently manage complex design assignments from concept through detailed design and release.
- Experience reviewing technical drawings, solving design challenges, and collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide technical guidance to other designers.
- An associate degree, bachelor's degree, technical certification, or equivalent professional experience in Mechanical Design, Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Ability to work onsite in Rochester and/or Rush, NY, with occasional travel up to 25%..
Preferred
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, or EIT with a plan to pursue licensure.
- Experience designing skid-mounted or modular process systems, pressure vessels or heat exchangers.
- Familiarity with engineering analysis and simulation tools such as SolidWorks FEA, ANSYS, or Caesar II.
